(he/him)

Carl, pictured (right) with husband John of 30 years, is the National Business Agent at United Scenic Artists, Local USA 829 and International Vice President of the IATSE, the first openly queer member of the IATSE Executive Board.

He has worked in the entertainment business for 42 years in a career that has focused on the care and support of artists and how to provide better working conditions, healthcare and a dignified retirement for those artists and their families. A staunch proponent of DEI, Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment initiatives, he is committed to introducing stronger provisions in all of the Union’s contracts and policies to dismantle gatekeeping and discrimination in all forms and to protect the membership and union staff from harassment and bullying. In addition to serving on the IATSE Pride Committee, he also serves as the IATSE liaison to the AFL-CIO’s department on Civil, Human and Women’s Rights.

As a member of ACT UP from the beginning in 1987, Carl participated in demonstrations demanding greater access to AIDS drugs on Wall Street, at the NYC General Post Office, and he’s proudly been arrested twice; first in 1988 during a protest at the FDA and again in ’89 for blocking access to the Brooklyn Bridge during a famed “Die In” to raise public awareness about AIDS. He also volunteered as a “buddy” at GMHC but most recently he’s focused his efforts on fundraising for various LGBTQIA+ organizations such as Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids and by participating in the Boston New York AIDS Ride.
