DESCRIPTION:In 1994\, Rodney Wilson\, a Missouri high school teacher\, believed a month should be dedicated to the celebration and teaching of gay and lesbian history\, and gathered other teachers and community leaders. DESCRIPTION:In 2003\, Ontario and British Columbia became the first two provinces to legalize same-sex marriage. The federal Civil Marriage Act came into force on 20 July 2005\, making same-sex marriage legal across Canada. Canada became the fourth country to permit same-sex marriages\, after the Netherlands (2000)\, Belgium (2003) and Spain (2005). Since then\, all provinces in Canada have recognized same-sex marriages. Marriage itself falls under federal jurisdiction in Canada. But the provinces regulate the solemnization of marriage (the formal ceremony that is either civil or religious). DESCRIPTION:International Non-Binary People’s Day is observed each year on 14 July and is aimed at raising awareness and organising around the issues faced by non-binary people around the world. The day was first celebrated in 2012\, started by Katje van Loon. The date was chosen for being precisely midway between International Men’s Day and International Women’s Day. \nMost countries in the world do not recognize non-binary as a legal gender\, meaning most self-identified non-binary people still have a passport matching their assigned sex and official identification. DESCRIPTION:Harvey Milk Day is organized by the Harvey Milk Foundation and celebrated each year on May 22 in memory of Harvey Milk\, a gay rights activist who was assassinated in 1978.
