DESCRIPTION:In 1994\, Rodney Wilson\, a Missouri high school teacher\, believed a month should be dedicated to the celebration and teaching of gay and lesbian history\, and gathered other teachers and community leaders. They selected October because public schools are in session and existing traditions\, such as Coming Out Day (October 11)\, occur that month. \nGay and Lesbian History Month was endorsed by GLAAD\, the Human Rights Campaign\, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force\, the National Education Association and other national organizations. DESCRIPTION:Centers continue to build\, unite\, and empower the LGBT community by offering services including; social services\, mental health counseling\, cultural programs\, recreational activities\, libraries\, educational programs\, support groups\, youth support\, elder support\, computer access\, and care and treatment (just to name a few). \nCreated by CenterLink: The Community of LGBT Centers\, Center Awareness Day is an annual day of awareness promoting the vital services offered by community centers and the central role they play in local communities. \nOn October 19 (every year)\, CenterLink holds “LGBT Center Awareness Day”\, a national day of action focused on awareness around the work of LGBT community centers everywhere.
